When writing fiction and about fiction there were differences and similarities. One difference was that when you’re writing about fiction you find yourself constantly synthesizing the narrative with other concepts you’ve learned prior to make meaning out of the text. However when you’re writing fiction your letting your mind operate from an area that feels really new and unfamiliar with the process of creating this type of literature.
However, It informed me about my own writing and how the there is a significant amount of detail that goes into writing fiction and writing about fiction. Therefore, the more detail you put into your work the more fascinating, interesting and enjoyable it is for your reader.
Moreover, when creating fiction although I liked the idea of writing fiction I felt as if it was more difficult, since I’m more of a right brain thinker I am geared towards analysis, or logical related tasks. If modern science advances in discovering these ideas hold up then I would say I totally agree with them because creating fiction was more difficult, therefore my writing was really cut and dry.
In contrast, when I was writing about fiction it was easier for me to dig into the essay and see how each of the component parts worked together. Therefore, it was also easy to see how you could develop points by the author’s written works after you’ve read the story carefully.
In addition, I learned that this exercise was valuable in helping students develop their vision or imagination and therefore help use it in their writing. According to modern science individuals who develop left brain functions are usually more creative, artistic or imaginative and better geared towards accomplishing language related tasks. I really believe that this can be a tool for students who have these abilities can develop them by these exercises. It may or may not be enjoyable to every student but it will be to those who have a vibrant or measureless imagination and are dying for someone to show them how to make use of it.

Hi Jess:)
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you how writing fiction allows your mind to have the opportunity to travel and consider elements that might be foreign. I have noticed in your writing that you utilize a lot of detail and imagery and i think that is what makes you such an excellent writer. I thought it was great to hear you consider yourself as a "right" thinker because i think that there are many students like yourself who don't typically find it easy to let your mind be free but that is what is so great about doing an assignment like this in the classroom. I like that you identified that there is that difference in the classroom of the students who would hate this type of work and those who would be eager to get writing. Muy bien!
What you wrote makes complete sense! Writing about fiction is so much easier than having to create a new story or genre that catches peoples imaginations and excites them into continue reading what one has written.
ReplyDeleteThat part about being a right hemisphere thinker is true and a lot of people forget how those characteristics need to be addressed when expecting a creative piece of literature.
These small assignments (Under What Circumstances... and X in Y land...) would be a fun activity for any scholarly level.
I'm looking forward to use what I've learned this semester in my future classrooms, as I'm sure you are as well. See you in class :)
